We start our journey to the Shimba Hills National Reserve from your Hotel or Cottage.

Just a few kilometers away from Diani Beach is the hilly landscape of this quiet little National Reserve.

Visiting the Shimba Hills National Reserve, it’s recommended very nice one to take a one-day Safari from the beach Hotels on the south coast or North coast.

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a 193 sq. km conservation area. Just a 45-minute drive from Diani Beach, it was described by Ernest Hemmingway as “The Green Hills of Africa“ This reserve was established in 1968 and this natural gem invites you for a day trip excursion or overnight relaxation.

This is a coastal tropical rainforest, with a humid climate, and has about 1200 mm of annual precipitation.

The Shimba Hills national reserve has an altitude of about 450 m above sea level. It’s also characterized by mountain forests alternating with open, lush green meadows.

Animals that can be seen include; buffalo, giraffes, forest pigs, the endangered east African sable Antelope waterbuck, and various species of monkeys, however, the forest is dense thus much effort should be exercised in order to see them.

Apart from animals, there are also different bird species that can be spotted eg. the African fish eagle. Common Black-collared barbet, Common Brown-hooded kingfisher, common crested Guinea fowl,

Golden palm weaver, the lovely Fischer’s turaco, Narina trogon, red-tailed ant-thrush, and east-coast akalat., African crowned eagle, fish eagle, the palm-nut vulture, The striking, iridescent Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird, four-colored bush, the plain-backed sunbird.

Insects

About 35% of Kenya’s butterfly species occur in Shimba Hills. These include the rare Acraea aubyni, an orange-and-black butterfly. Roger’s sailer butterfly. Swallowtail butterflies abound including the nervous Papilio Constantinus and numerous swordtail butterflies forgetting the large red-legged millipedes. Their constant churning of forest-floor litter generates much-needed humus and keeps the forest soils aerated

Another great experience in the park is the walk-hiking to Sheldrick Waterfall. Always you will be accompanied by a ranger to this idyllic spot where you will totally escape from the hustle and bustle of the city as you enjoy nature at its best.
