Nestled in a hilly landscape, Shimba Hills is a 193 sq. km coastal tropical rainforest renowned for its lush greenery and rich biodiversity. Described by Ernest Hemingway as “The Green Hills of Africa,” the reserve sits at an elevation of 450 meters above sea level and receives about 1200 mm of rainfall annually.
Wildlife & Birdwatching
Though dense forest cover makes sightings a challenge, lucky visitors may spot buffalo, giraffes, forest pigs, waterbuck, and the rare East African sable antelope—one of the last strongholds for this species. Monkeys are also common in the canopy.
