What to Know About Kenya’s Weather Before Your Safari.
 
Planning a safari in Kenya? Understanding the local weather is key to packing smart and making the most of your adventure.
Regional Climate Differences
Kenya’s weather can change quickly and varies significantly by region:
• Northern Kenya: Generally hot and warm throughout the year.
• Central Kenya (including Nairobi & the Mount Kenya region): Cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings. Pack layers!
• Coastal Kenya: Warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 34°C and an average sea temperature of 25°C.
Rainy Seasons
 
Kenya has two main rainy seasons:
• Short Rains: November – December
• Long Rains: April – May
During the long rains, some lodges and camps may close, so be sure to confirm availability before booking.
 
Best Travel Months
• Warmest: January – February
• Coolest: July – August
These months are ideal for game drives and other outdoor activities, though the cooler months may require warm clothing, especially in highland areas.
 
Safari Travel Tips for the Rainy Season
Traveling during the rainy season? While it can make off-road driving more challenging, it’s also when Kenya’s landscapes are at their most lush and beautiful.
Tip: A 4×4 vehicle (like a Land Cruiser or safari van) is highly recommended for rough terrain.

NB. Requirements depend on the type of safari.

NB: Electricity provision in Kenya is for 220/240 V 50 Hz. The power sockets are of British standard; in this regard, an EU adapter is required.

Kenya’s health system is advanced; there are a good number of world-class hospitals in Kenya. This includes Agha Khan Hospital, Karen Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, Mombasa Hospital, etc. In the rural areas, health centers are spread throughout, which is essential in the event one needs first aid.

 There are also a number of medical flying doctors in Kenya, offering 24-hour medical and evacuation services in the event there is a need. However, it’s very important for one to have travel insurance coverage to cater for any emergency.

Our guides are also trained to offer first aid to the visitors and are well informed about the nearest hospital if a need arises. Lodges and hotels have a resident clinical attendant who is always on standby to cater to the visitor’s needs.

 It’s also very essential and advisable to take anti-malaria drugs prior to arrival and should be taken continuously 4 weeks after leaving Kenya.

During the evening hours, it’s also advisable to try and avoid mosquito bites by using repellent and by wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers.
